The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs joined the 16-day global campaign on the fight against violence against women. Within the global campaign, the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched the information events using the slogan – “No Violence Against Women!”.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs – Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs – Tamila Barkalaia and the Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament – Mikheil Sarjveladze delivered the opening remarks at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Members of the Parliament, the representatives of the Public Defender’s Office, State Agencies and the International Organizations working on these issues attended the event.
Director of the Human Rights Protection and Investigation Quality Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Giorgi Osadze and the Director of the LEPL Agency for State Care and Assistance for the (Statutory) Victims of Human Trafficking of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs – Meri Maglaperidze delivered presentations, through which the invited guests received information about the activities implemented by the Ministries on fighting against violence against women.
The campaign aims to inform society about the country’s policy against violence against women, to empower/support women and prevent violence against them, to detect concealed violence cases and gender-based crimes at an early stage.
Within the campaign the short information text messages have already been sent to the population, numerous events are also planned, including: information meetings with different target groups in Tbilisi and regions; Also, an information meeting with the abused women; Working meeting with the non-governmental organizations, where various relevant topics will be discussed; Working meeting with the media, which aims to provide media representatives with the information on the ethical coverage of violence cases based on the analysis of local and international practices. In addition, with the support of the US Embassy, it is planned to place information banners on sexual harassment in public gathering places.
One of the priorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is to timely detect and effectively investigate the cases of domestic violence and violence against women, furthermore, to raise public awareness against violence and to support the victims of violence regarding state services, to remind public once again that the state has a strict policy against the perpetrators of violence.
16-day campaign on the fight against violence against women has been globally held since 1991, from November 25 to December 10. 187 countries and more than 5000 thousand organizations celebrate the campaign. The aim of the campaign is to promote the prevention of violence by raising public awareness on the violence against women.
